Your Challenge

We are seeking a Web Application Support Engineer to join our team in London who has extensive experience of working with Apache/Tomcat/MS SQL platform in a medium / large web production environment. You will be expected to have a good understanding of Java web development concepts.

You’ll be a technically minded individual with a proven track record of working well in a lively team environment. You must be able to develop relationships and work collaboratively with business leaders, software developers, and technology operational teams.

You must be able to demonstrate an ability to take total ownership of issues, be a quick learner, think on your feet and a proven problem solver. This opportunity would suit a web application support engineer

The role

The role is vital to the smooth running of the web applications we provide. You’ll be tasked with providing second and third line support and advice to external clients and internal stakeholders. You will also ensure the delivery layer meets SLAs for live running and ensure that application is performing at its optimum. Importantly you’ll need to engage with all areas of the business including 1st/2nd line application support team, infrastructure team and our offshore development team based in India, to help solve any issues that arise. You will be responsible to ensure the performance and integrity of the web applications and all supportive components. There is also a 4 weekly on-call support rota which includes maintenance and release work.

Your Essential skills:

  • Java Web Application development / support background

  • Windows Server 2012. Powershell. DNS / AD.

  • Apache HTTP Web Server; installation, configuration, troubleshooting. SSL Certificates.

  • Apache Tomcat; configuration, troubleshooting, performance tuning, JVM optimisation

  • MS SQL Server 2012; understanding of SQL queries, maintenance plans, alerting

  • Exposure and working knowledge set of networking concepts

  • Ability to analyse application and server logs, error interpretation

  • To work well under pressure, both autonomously and as part of a team
  • Proven problem solving ability
Excellent written and oral communication

Desirable skills

  • Understanding of virtualisation technologies

  • Understanding of ITIL Best Practice

  • Understanding of web server security and common threat methods
  • Enthusiasm, flexibility and able to think quickly on your feet

Key responsibilities

  • Day-to-day operational and functional support of the back end of the web applications, including basic infrastructure support
  •  
  • Build and Release upgrades for the application

  • Liaising with development team and support team to provide solutions
  • Maintaining application stability

  • Performance monitoring and optimisation

  • Complete assigned project work within defined timescales

  • Monitoring and responding to alerts from applications and infrastructure.
